YOU HAVE ALL YOU NEED

We like to think that there is just one thing missing that will get us a D1 scholarship. We feel the need to go to more hitting lessons, fielding lessons, camps, clinics, sports psychologists, and tutors. We need to post our highlight video to social media so coaches will see it (which  rarely works). We need to get attention. We need eyes on us. We pursue a logo and we run a race without stopping to appreciate the journey.

I have noticed this in my training. I have been doing more distance based running to improve my overall shape. During my runs, there have been moments where I'm so eager to get to the finish line that I don't even remember the beauty of the things I saw while running outside, next to the ocean where I live nonetheless. We purse more, we pursue the end goal, all to feel anxious and still feel like we aren't doing enough. And maybe you aren't doing enough, but that doesn't mean there is some magic resource that is going to get you to the next level.

You have all you need. It's in your mindset.

I remember growing up playing baseball, basketball, and football in the backyard with my brothers. I hit in the backyard off a tee with my dad. I went to my travel ball and high school practices. We were resourceful with what we had and we made the most of it. Most importantly, those moments in the backyard built a competitiveness in me and a want and a will to win. I look back on my development process and it is very similar to other professional players I now call teammates. It's also very similar to countless of the best professional baseball players in history, as shown in Joe Posnanski's book The Baseball 100.  You have what you have. Use it. Be grateful for it.

Gratitude should be at the center of everything we do. In this society we always tend to think more is better, but what if we channeled our energy into using what has already been given to us as best we can? What if, instead of seeking attention or validation, we just focused on being good stewards of our talents? What I know to be true is that good things find the people that use what they have.

Be grateful.
Be resourceful.
Do the work.

You have everything you need.
